I believe that the term virginity was created back in the 50s and 60s as a synonym for innocence. People then thought that virgins were innocent and once one had sex, they would magically become an adult and ready for the real world. That is not such the case now. I am still a virgin by today's standards, but I am by no means innocent. I guess it is easier to determine when a person has had sex then when they have lost their innocence.
