How can I start video conferencing/live webcast services???

Over the past years, video conferencing has made great strides in improving the technical scenario.I would like to start video conferencing /live webcast but I've a very less knowledge about this.
Can somebody help me with it? I need to know how it is implemented and used and how video conferencing may increase the efficiency/ productivity. Which software is good for making it?

Please drop in your comments....
