Exclamation War Driving!

Anybody ever here go war driving? If you don't know what war driving is, it's when you drive around with a laptop and try to connect to the internet through insecure networks to either hack or use their IP instead of your own.

I never had a laptop when it was popular but I know people who used to always talk about it. Nowadays lots of public places have wifi so if I just need an internet connection it's easy to find. War drive is more specific to using other people's networks for shady activity, which is a lot different than checking your email using your neighbor's wifi.

Why don't people secure their wifi anyway? It's even easier to go war driving nowadays with just about everybody having wireless networks in their houses and about 1 in 10 being secured..

I saw a show about something like this. These guys would break into people's computers by hacking through their insecure wifi setups.

lol, no doubt eh?

When my internet goes down, I steal a wireless connection that I can connect to in my apartment. It's slow as hell, so I prefer my normal connection, but it's still handy to have in a pinch.

Yeah the term is mostly used to describe people who either break into people's computers or just don't want to use their own IP for certain activities they plan to do, i.e. hacking. People without a secure wireless network can get government agents at their door because of unusual internet activity coming from their IP.

Wireless networking security is not something to be taken lightly.

Then there are the people who think sitting in a Starbucks surfing MySpace counts as war driving...

I've done it a few times. I used to drive around with a friend (Albert...) looking for random wireless connections. We used to get on our school's network and **** with all of the folders.
