I might have a problem

It dawned on me tonight that I might have a drinking problem. Nothing severe, I don't let it affect my life, but when I get depressed, down or stressed I drink. Is that normal? Someone once told me, drink to raise your spirits, not to drown your sorrows. As I finished a bottle a Jim Beam tonight (that I only bought last Friday) it kind of dawned on me that I might have a problem... what do I do from here? Do I have a problem or not?

Don't worry I would never do anything physically harmful to myself or anyone around me.

Hmmm. It's easy to drink when you are feeling down but it's probably not a healthy option to overdo it if you're depressed.

What other things could you do instead? i.e. music, movies, etc? Maybe you just need to get out and do some things to take your mind off whatever it is that's bothering you?

I don't think you have a drinking problem. If you did, you would of had about 5bottles of Jim Beam right now. But if you need to talk to someone, we are here for you.

My concern is that it will get to that point. I'm at the point now if you took my booze I'd get mad or go thru withdrawl...

They usually have a checklist in the clinics to know more or less if you have a drinking problem (or the potential to have one). It includes your drinking habits and how your drinking behavior affects your life and the people around you.

I wouldn't wait though to fulfill majority of the items on the list before doing something about the issue. I'f you're concerned that you might not be able to control your urge to drink one day, get rid of the bottles at home right now and talk to your wife about it. If it becomes difficult for you to handle, then seek help (there are a lot of "anonymous" groups or health groups willing to help you through this) and other methods of dealing with your stress/depression other than alcohol.

Alcohol is a depressant, so your depression will naturally get worse the more you drink. I found the best way to get over stress and depression is by working out. It's amazing how the mind reacts to a healthy body.

How does being sad to not anymore have an alcohol problem (or was that sad not to have alcohol) help?
