Don't Paint It, Wrap It!

BMW owner wraps black car to white

When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. Thanks for the tip Frank.

Now that's a way to do it. Never thought of that. Man I am in the wrong business.
I wonder how much it would cost to do that to my surf wagon? I wonder if they do designs or is it just plain colors for now?

Either way I think I will be looking into this further.

Thanks for posting this.

Ugh.. I told my boyfriend it was possible. I told him this is what I wanted to do to my car semi-jokingly, and he was 100% it couldn't happen. Now I can show him this even though he will deny saying it couldn't be done. =)

Hey, that's pretty cool and looks really good. I would never know it wasn't painted.

I think that they just took a picture of a painted car.

That's pretty cool though, I'll bet that it's not as easily scratched as paint and it's a lot cheaper. (it will be cheaper eventually if it's not already)

WOW! That is actually really awesome. I've seen cars that do this with advertising or for racing numbers and stuff but I didn't realize it was possible to wrap every square inch.

Here's an example of this process being used for advertising:

I wonder how much something like that would cost to have done and if the original paint underneath would be ruined over time if you left the wrap on for years?
------
EDIT: Looks like it can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 for this process...

Not even sure if it's worth it at that price. I definitely wouldn't do it.

It seems alright but it's only worth the price if it protects instead of destroying the paint underneath.

The only issue is the inside of the doors and under the hood and all that will still be the old color. And from what I gathered it doesn't seem to hurt the paint underneath.

I read about this! What a cool concept...I assume it's cheaper than repainting, and it could theoretically protect your finish if you have it done right.

Yeah, supposedly you can leave the tape on the car for a few years. I'm sure that's assuming your clearcoat is in very good shape. And if you leave portions of the car un-taped, you might see some uneven fading on those parts from the sun beating down on it. That guy with the BMW left his roof un-taped...I wonder if it'll look different in 4 years when he takes the cover off the rest of the car.

And wow...the matte black finish on that G35 looks incredible!! So aggressive.
