Bonjour!
Since blogging about my real life won't generate much interest unless you're a stay-at-home parent and think that baby poop is a big event, I decided to write about GF life instead, hence the gfisms series. Enjoy!

Happy Halloween!
Today, some of us have swapped "looks" for the weekend. I have come to associate faces with certain behaviors and styles. So whenever I see a discrepancy because of the switch, it gets me confused for a while. Several of us are dressing up differently on purpose, putting on costumes as part of the Halloween tradition. Costume parties remind me of masquerade balls. What a way to hide behind something, an act. A character in one of the movies I like talked about people and acts. She said everyone has an act. Even being oneself, or not having an act is an act. Interesting.
In a way, life in GF is like going to a masquerade ball. Everyone puts on a face. It's up to you to simply accept what you see first or you can try to figure out the act behind it. I surely have formed impressions based on costumes and masks but there's often a desire in me to take off a person's mask to meet the person inside and find out who s/he really is. I think if I stopped with my initial impressions, I would have missed a lot of amazing qualities not often visible in my first few interactions with some people. I wouldn't have discovered some of the close friendships I have now.
If I stopped with known reputations, I would have failed to see the other things a person could offer. Reputations aren't built overnight, so it makes you think there must be some truth to it. But I also consider the source of the reputation and I see for myself whether this is really how I should view someone. Of course there are people who, no matter how much benefit of the doubt you give them, they always end up disappointing you. Well, at least they're consistent.
So this weekend, as some of you are busy trick or treating in your funky costumes, I'll be that weird lady sitting by the window watching you, probably figuring out your act. If you come knocking at my door, I might even give you a candy.
