American Psycho - Anyone Read This?

Just finished this book and it's really quite amazing. The characters, dark humor, storytelling style alone make it enjoyable to read, supposing you can get past the explicit sex and murder scenes.

*Spoilers Ahead*

Anyways, has anyone figured out the moral of the book? I suppose my literary skills aren't up to snuff, as it's been a while since I've seriously read a book. It seems to me though that the protagonist, Patrick Bateman, illustrates how meaningless your life is and how twisted it can become if you have anything you want. Money, exceptional professional skill, great taste, sex, drugs, etc. Most of the characters in this book are excessively successful yet excessively shallow. To me, it seems as though because of the ease of his life, he finds meaning in nothing. As a result, he kills for sensation. I think he was relatively sane at birth, but has had an easy life that drove him crazy. However, I'm still not fully sure if he's naturally crazy or not.

*End Spoilers*

If you've read this book, can you explain how you felt about it?

Well the movie is great too, and I'd say, represents the book better than most other movie based on a novel.

I loved this book, and the movie is great as well. I thought that the moral had to deal with the idea of the faceless businessman. Bateman was always being called the wrong name, and getting mistaken for other people. That is how everything was able to happen the way that it did. I would go into more details on the theory, but it's been too long since I've read the book to really offer much support at the moment. I think it's about time I read it again.
