1984

Did this book scare anyone else like it scared me?

Just how dead on Orwell is with his descriptions of the new age, even though 1984 didn't quite pan out like that it's looker clearer by the day that this is where the world is turning.

I dunno it just really got to me. Did anyone else enjoy this novel?

Yeah I did, it's one of my favourite novels. I haven't read it in 2 years though so I'll have to pick it up again sometime soon. I wonder if you've read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, that's similar and also good. They kinda scare me too.

I think while 1984 may be a bit extreme in reference of today's society, I would say Atlas Shrugged is more of a realistic depiction of today's society and how America is slowly going down the crapper into economic fascism.

Yeah, it's one of the best, no doubt about that. You have to read Animal Farm by Eric Blair/George Orwell as well :). But Brave New World also have these themes about political movement and human nature explored well (By Holy Ford). It's something everyone should read some time. It shares the desperation of the main character in some ways as a driver for the story..

I don't know, for some reason I kept thinking about Kafka's "The Trial" (or "The Process", as it's translated to more accurately elsewhere) when reading your impressions of 1984, even if it's not the same type of story. Might be worth picking up, if you're looking for classics that shouldn't be missed anyway.

While I'm making recommendations... if you're in the mood for something more modern and less completely depressing that takes the "fiction to describe problems in reality" thing to new heights, you should start to read Terry Pratchett. "The Nightwatch" had a pretty large release earlier on. But the entire Discworld- series is a very, very good stream of separate but interesting stories in that sense.. Can be picked up at any point, and read in any direction. :)

1984 is always praised as prophetic and Orwell had some foresight.

I read this for pleasure in my senior year and I loved it and its one of my favorites for sure.
