Definitely fantasy/sci-fi for me, as well. A perfect and creative form of escape.
You guys are right, though; too many cheap and poorly written novels out there. You have to do your research. I read the first in a series about a year ago that's actually pretty good and creative. The series is called "The Belgariad" and I can't think of the author offhand.
I generally like fantasy and science fiction the best. Though I am also fond of good historical novels. I like a lot of the classics too. Actually, maybe I should just say that I like good books, and fantasy and science fiction get a little more leeway for not being quite as well technically executed.
I read mainly factual and biographical books now that I am a mother as I can read a little part of each without losing the momentum of a story. When I had no such responsibilities I would read all kinds of novels and in particular horror and thriller ones.
I'm big on the Classic Literature, being that the words used and the way things are written is absolutley phenomenal. I was really heavy into fantasy at one point and I still am. Just that Classic books of Fiction take you to these wondrous place that not to many books of today do.
