BCS vs Playoff
This is always the hot topic among college football fans every year. Do you like the BCS? Or do you think college football should have a playoff like every other sport?
I've always been strongly opposed to a playoff in college football, and I'm sure I'll be the only one here on that side of the fence. I'll wait to post my reasons why after some other people reply.

I'm torn quite frankly.
On one hand, the way the bowl system is right now, every game matters. If you lose, your chance at the National Championship is pretty much gone, so teams have to play their hardest every game.
On the other hand, I somewhat agree with one of the big complaints of the BCS system that 'if your team wasn't a powerhouse a few decades ago, you won't get serious consideration.' With a playoff system, everyone would get a chance to prove themselves.
Both systems have perks in my mind. I wouldn't mind seeing a playoff system, but I also wouldn't mind seeing the BCS system stick around.

I dont like being that guy but I havent heard a good reason why the BCS is any better then a playoff system.
What does the winner of the Rose Bowl get? They get nothing. Oh great you won a BCS title game...you arent the champion of college football. Unless you win the championship, you arent a winner.

Isn't that the same with a playoff? Only the champions actually win something. Bowl games give a lot of teams the chance to end the year with a win and build some momentum going into the next year.

No, I dont think they are comparable at all. Winning your last game is meaningless unless you are being crowned the champion of college football.
I would do a short playoff...the top 4 teams. 1 v 4 and 2 vs 3 and then the winners play each other. If you wanna get freaky have 1 and 2 get byes and take the top 6...either way.
I know the bowl committees arent gonna stand by and let their sugar, orange, rose, fiesta bowls etc go away so call the playoff games that if you have to.
My team is Mizzou and they beat Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl last year. So what? I was happy they won but in reality they won...uh...nothing.

The rankings are my biggest complaint too. Why on earth is there a coaches poll? Do they think coaches are objective enough to be determining who gets to play for a championship? It's absolutely ridiculous.

on the other hand, there are way too many bowl games.

Nothing wrong with extra football games. Gives me something to watch.

Bowl games give the smaller programs something to shoot for. For a lot of schools, playing in a bowl game and actually winning is a big accomplishment and can go a long way in helping build the program, helps recruiting, etc.

A small playoff would be good. I always shake my head when I hear people talking about a 16 or 32 team playoff. It would completely ruin the sport.

Missouri got shafted. They should have been in a BCS bowl.

Now I won't pretend that I know a lot about the BCS System, but I think playoff system would be better. I know it's more competetive with the BCS system because every game counts. But it would be more fun if College Football would make a playoff system like College Basketball. Lets say you have the top 16 teams that make it, the team that is ranked first plays against the 16 ranked team, and so forth. I think it would be more fun and even more competetive that way, and a team that loses one game can make it to the finals, unlike the BCS.
Also I hate it that if you lose one game your odds of making the BCS are almost impossible. Just take the Sooners for example, a couple of years ago they lost a game, and it was because of a blown call by the refferee and because of him they lost the game and there chances of making the BCS game was gone down the drain.

Agreed 100% here. We dont need two polls...we need one poll...and we need just experts voting on it.

I do agree with you there. I guess I dont really have a problem with Bowl Games per say but I think a playoff would be good for the sport. You mentioned a huge team playoff and I agree that's too many and would ruin it. That will de-value the regular season. I think you can have a small playoff and the regular season can still mean a ton. The regular season in college football is more important then in any sport and that needs to be preserved.

Tell me about it. Last time I checked Mizzou whiped up on Illinois AND Kansas and somehow they both got BCS bids over the Tigers. Doesnt make sense.

A 16 team playoff would take away what makes college football unique, and that's the regular season. Every game is like a playoff game. A big playoff rewards teams for having mediocre seasons.

Blown calls can happen in playoff games too. By the way, the Sooners played in the title game in '03 and '04 and have lost more than once every year since then, so a blown call has never ruined their chances. If you don't win all your games you have no right to complain.
