M. Night Shyamalan Wants an Unbreakable Sequel, Now!

Quote:
If there's one sequel that I'd definitely love to see, it would be that of M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable. I know I'm not the only one who loves that movie and I know I'm not the only one who wants to see a sequel. Unbreakable opened in theaters in November of 2000, which makes it nearly eight years since the film first arrived. SciFi was talking with Shyamalan during a promotion for The Happening and got him to comment on the idea of another Unbreakable. "I want to write it right now, but I want to write it for the right reasons," Shyamalan told them. Is this finally the news we've all been waiting to hear for years?!

This might finally be a dream come true. By this point in time, I thought it would never happen. But apparently Shyamalan really wants to find the right story. "I want a story to pop into my head that is organic and expressive of who I am. You know, these are all kind of journals of where I am emotionally, so it's kind of hard. I'm kind of trying to go back to the journal that existed in 1999 for me. But I know me: As soon as I give up on it is when the idea will come to me." He also goes on to talk about how many people come up to him saying that Unbreakable is their favorite movie, which is a conversation I always have amongst my friends. So many people love that movie but no one ever talks about it.

Shyamalan also goes on to talk about his experience making the film as well as the underlying theme with I think most moviegoers never acknowledge. "When Unbreakable came out, I was like, 'God, man I'm so excited.' I thought [it] was like comic books. No one has really done comic books like this: reality-based comic books. I really think this is a metaphor for things that people can go crazy over." Unfortunately the film wasn't well received in theaters. "I felt really hurt, and I couldn't bring myself to write." Now he's coming off a rather harsh reaction to The Happening, which may mean there's no better time than now to go back and visit a film which that seems to have grown own people (quite a bit) over time.

Beyond these few details, Shyamalan didn't add much more to the idea of making a sequel. It's all just an idea right now and we'll have to wait patiently to see if it plays out. My own advice for M. Night - there are really only two directions you can go to get back on the right track after The Happening mistake - either make a sequel to Unbreakable or go back to your low-budget indie roots.

I loved Unbreakable and would definitely go see a sequel as long as Shyamalan doesn't screw it up.

I loved Unbreakable, it was a great origin movie. However with that said I can't see how a sequel could come close to rivalling the first ones mystery and intrigue. Wouldn't a sequel probably just fall into a lame sub par super hero flick? It's not like theres a shortage of those...

It's a great movie, but I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like it. It was also a very, very slow moving movie. Not the huge action-fests people expect from super hero movies.

I'd love to see a sequel, but I'm not sure what kind of story could be told with it, short of a completely separate tale.
