Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire Officially Returning for Spider-Man 4

Quote:
The moment I walked out after seeing Spider-Man 3 last year, I knew it was over. There was no way that they could continue this franchise after such a lackluster conclusion. But I guessed wrong - and as we all know, Sony is hard at work on Spider-Man 4. In a surprising announcement today, Nikki Finke on Deadline Hollywood reports that both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire will be returning to Spider-Man 4. The deal apparently came together recently, because Finke says that a few weeks ago "Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was openly discussing Tobey's potential replacements." Finke also adds that "the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time." Whoa…

When Sony confirmed that they were working on Spider-Man 4 for 2011, the speculation was that either Sam Raimi or Tobey Maguire would not return, considering both of them have spent nearly 9 years of their life on Spider-Man already. Finke does say that there is no deal for Kirsten Dunst's return yet, but Sony said they "would never recast her." As for the focus of this film, apparently Sony isn't going to go the dark route. "Sam Raimi made the first serious superhero movie, and others followed. The difference between Spider-Man and Batman is that Batman is dueling with a dark side of himself, and that's not what Peter Parker's struggle is. Peter Parker has no dark side of himself." I thought that's exactly what the third movie is about? Maybe they finally learned from their mistakes?

As for the villain and early details on the story, Finke only provides this tidbit: "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who's playing it." The script for this sequel was penned by James Vanderbilt, of The Rundown and Fincher's Zodiac previously. We also mentioned this at the start, but I'd say it's definitely worth mentioning again. "The studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and 'it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together.'" Two more back-to-back Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire?! I'm not sure whether I'm excited by this news or just baffled.

Sweet. Spider Man 3 was very disappointing to say the least and I wouldn't even have bothered to see 4 if it didn't have Maguire. Because imo, he's an awesome Spider Man.

But anyways, I'm very happy about this. And apparently they won't be going the "dark route" again so thank goodness for that.

So what are your thoughts everyone? Who do you think the Villain might be? Time for speculation!

Theres a whole other thread somewhere about people speculating about the future of this franchise, villain wise. This is good news for me, I like Tobey as Spidey and Rami directs it well. He lost sight of a lot of things that made the first 2 great with the third so hopefully he'll be more cautious when approaching this one. I think they've got the right cast and directer they've just made a few mistakes. Spider-man 3 wasn't great but to be honest I don't think it's as bad as everyone says. Some parts of it were done pretty well but they bit off way more than they could chew.

Superherohype has a similar article;
Quote:
Back in May, Cinematical was the first to report that Sony Pictures might shoot Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 at the same time using James Vanderbilt's script that the site said spans two films.

Now, Deadline Hollywood Daily has added on that director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have apparently signed on the dotted line for Spider-Man 4, which the studio is targeting for a May 2011 release.

DHD adds that there's no deal for Kirsten Dunst to return as Mary Jane Watson yet, but the character will be featured and the studio would not recast her.

As for the baddie in the fourth picture, the site says that principal photography doesn't start until the fall of 2009 and that once we find out who the villain we'll know who is playing it. Naturally, speculation would put Dylan Baker's character Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard at the head of the line, but who knows?

According to the site, "the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and 'it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together.'"

DHD also says that Sony has hired two screenwriters to pen the new script for the Spidey spin-off Venom.

Is this all accurate? We'll have to wait and see if/when the studio starts making some announcements, which could be a while!

I like the idea of 4 and 5 being shot back to back aslong as they have the right villains to make it worth having a 2 parter. It's a shame this wasn't considered for the symbiote story really...

Well, I just hope that they take this next production seriously to make an awesome Spidey film like the first 2. Spider-man 3 wasn't a terrible movie, but it disappointed the hell out of me. After the success of Iron Man and somewhat success of Incredible Hulk, Sam has gotta make sure that they step it up.
