I send my kids to school so they can come home with an education, not a packet of condoms.
No, I don't think I'd like them going into the bathroom to freshen up and grabbing a condom on the way out.
Do I think it will encourage them to have sex? No, but I also don't think a public school is the place for a child to pick up their sexual supplies.

Raos, oh yes, I absolutely agree that SOME might consider all that. But the MAJORITY, unfortunately, do not. As I said, most of the kids around me were having sex. Peer pressure plays a huge role in all this too. I did not give in. My best friend at a time gave in.

But schools are where our children are taught sex education. If we give them information of how to have safe sex and even show them how to place condoms on rubber immitations, then why not provide them with the magical protection we are teaching them about and are trying to encourage to use?

They wouldn't be free Angels, they would be in vending machines. Basically, it would be no different between getting them in the school bathroom and buying them at a drug store down the street.

So since they were having sex already, wouldn't it have made sense to let them have access to protection?

Raos, I have clearly stated that I am on no one's side. I gave pros and cons. Never said it wouldn't make sense. Never said it would only bring negative or positive consequences.

I think a lot of the reasons so many teenagers are getting pregnant and STD's is because they get embarrassed about buying condoms from a shop. At least if they were available at school they could buy them and avoid the uncomfortable situation.

I'd be worried about the kids having sex in school. A more logical way to go about it is distributing the condoms from the nurse/guidance office in a discrete way.

You can't stop the kids form having sex. At least we can help them to do it safely.

They also take quite a few other subjects, none of which send them off with anything more than knowledge.
I preach abstinence to my girls, naturally I'm not so naive as to think disappointing mom will make them abstain from indulging their curiosities about sex. But, supporting condoms in school bathrooms would make me a bit hypocritical, don't you think?

Well, no offense but abstinence is not a very logical choice of "protection" in the first place. Not only are humans animals and thus subject to the whims of our own biological drives (and we can only resist so much or for so long) but we're also subject these days to massive levels of social and peer pressure. All in all, kids are very likely to at least experiment a few times during high school. Like Steve said, if condoms were available at a nurse's office (like they are in most colleges) that would be great because it acknowledges the possibility of teenage sex and provides protection during it. The weird thing that I still have yet to figure out is how it magically encourages kids to do so or suggests that people think it's okay (not saying you did, I'm just rambling).
