Mats Sundin Watch
So Mats Sundin said that he was going to make his decision in early August about his hockey future.
Now my question to you guys is this. Do you believe he's going to play in the NHL next season? If so for which team? Or do you believe he's going to hang them up?
Here's a few teams that I believe he could go to.
Montreal Canadiens
Vancouver Canucks
Toronto Maple Leafs
New York Rangers
I think those are the four teams that he's interested playing with. I believe the Canucks game him the best offer, two years, 10 million a season.
Thoughts?

No one will match the Canucks offer, and if Sundin dreams of winning the cup he won't even think about the Canucks. So forget Toronto. Draw between NYR and Mtl.. his destiny is in Gainey's wallet.

I totally agree no one his going to offer a bigger contract then Vancouver and he wants to play for a Cup contender, and the Canucks are not near of winning a cup like the Canadiens are in my opinion. But they do have Luongo so you never know.
With that being said I really hope he comes to Montreal, he would help the team in so many different ways. He still can put the puck in the net, if healthy I believe he can score 25+ goals, he's very smart with the puck, good playmaker, doesn't take stupid penalties, and he's a great leader. He would also be great in a playoff run.
I don't know who he would play with, but I'm sure we can find room for him on the first or second line.
With that being said, should be interesting to see where he goes.

If he really wants to win a Cup, he'd sign with Montreal, they have the best chance of all the teams listed. My guess is that he is looking for something short-term, with loads of money and a chance of contending for the Cup. My guess is that if he doesn't care about leaving Toronto, then he'll go to Vancouver for 2 years, I mean Hell, they aren't that out of it, they could be a contender by Sundin's 2nd season, especially with Luongo. IMO, it's just between Vancouver and Toronto, he has plenty of hockey left in him.

Montreal could be a very smart choice for him.
Sundin is a great player but not my taste.
He hasn't showed enough much about emotion.

So BStreet you don't believe that Sundin would go to Montreal? I personally don't see him going back to Toronto. They have no chance of winning a Stanley Cup anytime soon.
I agree with you that he's looking something short-term, but I don't believe that money is much of an issue for him. Don't get me wrong he won't sign a 2 year contract worth six million. But I mean that if he really wants to win a cup then he'll take lets say 7.5 million a year from Montreal, rather then 10 million a season from Vancouver.

Well I'm not 100% positive, but I believe if he went from Toronto to Montreal, then he'd be the next Benedict Arnold to most people. I think he has some loyalty to TO, he's played there all his life, and i'd almost be equivalent (if you are familiar with the MLB) of Johnny Damon signing with the Yankees from the Red Sox.
I think ultimately Vancouver has a lot of potential, and Sundin could be the one to push them over the top, add that to the fact that they're out in the West, also add that to the fact that they are offering the most money, and I think Vancouver could be a suitable home. I'm not entirely sure, but I have a feeling about Vancouver reeling him in.

I personally dont see much potential in the Canucks, other then the Sedin's brothers and Demitra, I don't see much talent on that team. But when you have Luongo who is arguable the best goalie in the league anything can happens. Now if they added Sundin then that would add another major weapon, but I don't think that would get them over the hump.
Now I know it would be huge if Sundin went to Montreal, because their rivalry are one of the biggest in NHL history. But for some reason I don't think it would be the same thing as Johnny Damon, because Damon only played a few seasons for Boston, Sundin played almost his whole career, and most of the Leafs fan that I talked to really want him to win a ring because of what he's done for Toronto. Even if that means that he has to play for Montreal.

I just dont understand why you guys think Vancouver is such a farfetched deal with him. Especially cup wise!
What I have seen in Sundin in Toronto is he is one hell of a player. One of the few that plays both ends of the ice and really means it. He bangs his way to the net and tosses his weight around in front of his own net.
As much as it pains me to say this, I think doing so has hurt his offensive ability. Look at some of the netminders he's played in front of so far... Curtis Joseph, good but IMO not worthy of a HOF spot just on performance. Ed Belfour, dont get me started.... I hate this guy. Andrew Raycroft, promising but I still dont know what happened to him. Tellqvist, Conklin (did he play for the leafs? I dunno he's played for everyone), the list goes on and on. All of these goalies that the Leafs have had in front of Sundin have been decent, but not great. I can see why a player capable of leading and/or winning the scoring race consecutively like Sundin has to play the way he has so defensively.
Now put him in front of Luongo, one of the NHL's premier goalies right now and I think his game will change dramatically. He'd have both the Sedin twins, Mattias Ohlund, Alexander Edler, hell even Kyle Wellwood, all players he's played with at one point either internationally or with the Leafs. You gotta admit the Sedin twins can pass a puck, match that with Sundins wicked backhand and that'd be one hell of a trio I'd fear as an opponent. Or the Give and Go's that they could work with Ohlund? Sundin has more than enough ability to let a player like Ohlund step up and lay some heat on an opposing goalie without worrying about enough skill to drop back for him.
My assumption is, if Sundin goes to Vancouver.... watch for them to be cup contenders. That current roster doesnt have any major Veterans to lead them. Sundin would be perfect fit with the Canucks.

I like Sundin to Vancouver, I just don't see him downright turning his cheek to TO and signing with Montreal, it would be blasphemy, and I feel he is very loyal to Toronto. If he'd sign with the Habs, his chances of iwnning a Cup would increase a whole ****load, but he'd also be wipng his **** with a Leafs jersey at the same time.
Vancouver has some potential, but I don't see Sundin winning a Cup with the Nucks, Hell probably his only chance of winning a Cup is to sign with the damn Wings. He has had some pretty god help throughout his career, and he still was never able to hoist the Cup, I just don't get it.
Ultimately, my guess is with the Nucks, but I just never see Mats hoisting the Cup, if he wasn't able to get it done with guys like Ed Belfour, Bryan McCabe, Curtis Joseph, Alexander Mogilny, Darcy Tucker, then I just don't see it happening, especially with guys like the Sedin twins, his best chances are with the Kos****yn brothers, but I just don't think he has it in him to turn his back on the Leafs in that way.
