A little boy was mauled to death today after falling into the African painted dog exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.
"The screams just kept coming and coming: 'Someone help. Someone has to do something,'" recounted Angela Cinti, 20, of Bethel Park, who was visiting the zoo today with her boyfriend Nick Kramer, 16, of Bethel Park.
The incident occurred at 11:48 a.m. at the Highland Park complex, according to an emergency dispatch supervisor. The zoo was shut down within a half-hour of the incident and will remain closed indefinitely.

Pittsburgh Zoo official, witnesses discuss fatal mauling of child at African painted dogs exhibit
This little 3 year old kid was with his mother at the zoo when he feel over a railing and into the exhibit with the dogs and they mauled him to death. What a horrible thing to happen.

I feel so sorry for this child. I don't understand how a 3 year old feel over a 4 ft tall safety rail. Maybe I'm being too critical but wasn't his mother watching him, was he climbing on the fence when her back was turned?

As sad as this is and it is never nice when a childs life is lost in such a horrific way I do hope the dogs are not put down but are instead are allowed to go free, these are wild animals and as horrible as this is they were only doing what is in their nature. I do think questions needs to be asked as to how the child was able to get into the exhibit and why the parents were not watching what was happening.

I live up where this happened, and the latest new story I heard was that the mother had lifted the kid to get a better view of the animals, the kid leaned forward, and she lost her grip on him.

I know they had to shoot one of the dogs, but I believe the rest are going to be left unharmed, and I sure hope so since they can't help their natural instinct and the fact that people will ignore the signs stating not to stand on the rails and such.

What a sad end to what should have been a happy day.

Someone should shoot the mom.

I can't wait for the people who will **** and protest that they all need to be put down because they're dangerous. No **** they're dangerous, that's why they're in a ****ing caged area where YOU AREN'T SUPPOSE TO GO.

If my son wanted a better view I picked him up and held him. I wouldn't let him stand on a rail like that. They don't want you on it for a reason.

I don't look for the dogs to be killed. They are an endangered species.

Not the dogs fault at all, maybe the zoo's for not having better safety railing, maybe the Mum's for not watching, maybe the kids for being annoying and climbing on the fence to begin with. If the dogs are put down it's just pathetic.

I wouldn't put the dogs down here. Like has been said they are wild animals, what do you expect them to do? Pick up the kid and ride him to safety? Not gonna happen.

I feel bad for the kid and the mom. The mom is dumb and reckless though...can't let that happen.

I know its easy to say what you will do after the fact but I don't understand why that mom didn't jump in after him. If that were my son I would of been right behind him fighting for him until they killed me or I won. I could of not stood there watching my baby die like that.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened, do people ever learn.

Here is an article on the incident from today and a picture of the railing the child fell from.

African painted dogs that mauled child at Pittsburgh zoo will not be euthanized, CEO says - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The African painted dogs that mauled to death a child at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium on Sunday will not be euthanized, remaining instead in quarantine
The animals will remain in quarantine for 30 days, but the overlook to the exhibit will not reopen at all throughout the winter.

The boy fell from an observation area and was small enough that he bounced twice on protective netting before falling into the exhibit. An Allegheny County medical examiner's review found that the boy was not fatally injured in the fall.

There are more pictures of the exhibit. There is also a video from the press release that explains what happened. Explains also about the painted dogs being an endangered species and that the one dog who was shot was not even near the child when shot.

Good to hear they aren't being euthanized.
