Eh?
Care to give some examples? I was talking with Smel about this and we couldn't agree on the proper usage. ![]() Also, to the Canadians here, do you use eh a lot? |

Asking a rhetorical question is a good basis for attaching a "eh"

Using eh, with a question emphasis on the end, we can turn any statement, into a question. Crazy weather we're having today, eh?
Or we can use it to say 'hey get, this' or 'you see' Example " So I was driving down the road, eh, when all of a sudden' Or if you told someone that a person was acting a certain way. Then that person walked over and started acting that way, you'd turn to the person you were initially talking to, point to the acting person and say 'Eh?' Other than that, I can't really pick out more examples. I only know that I say it lots because other people tell me that I do. Otherwise, I have no clue that I'm saying it when I say it. |

I don't use the "word" eh! all that often. I might say something like I can't believe they lost, eh! but I think Americans believe Canadians say every sentence they say, but that's totally false. I rarely hear to be honest with you guys.

I sometimes say it as in a "What the hell?!" kind of "Eh?!".

![]() I never said Canadians use it all the time though. They use it WAY more than other countries though. I mean, I NEVER hear it EVER. There was this one guy I used to talk to on IM who was from Canada who would use it a lot. I played XBL with him a few times and he would say it then too so I won't believe for a second that it's not common in Canada. You might not hear it all the time but even so it's way more common there than it is here.

I know you never said that we use it all the time, also it's true Canadians use it more than other countries. But with that being said, we don't say it as much as some Americans think we do. Same thing with About, we don't say aboot, we say about like everyone else.

Well it's funny you mention the about thing. I agree that only the people with a really thick Canadian accent say abOOT but from my experience it's still more like "aboat" than "abowt" (bow as in cow sound).

As far as I know, it's more the maritimers that say aboot (Newfoundland, PEI etc). And I say abowt, not aboat lol. Maybe that's a quebec thing? Who knows.
And Babe =P You probably say eh alot more than you realize. I know I do. I once listened to a conversation someone had taped of me. On a video or something, and I remember picking out quite a few times that I said eh. But when I was talking to someone, I didn't remember saying eh that much. When you try to listen for it as your talking, subconciously you stop saying eh cause you're looking for it. |

I use "Eh!?" in some of my posts and I'm not even Canadian. Why? Well, I like using it my posts along with "Aye." Now, combine the two and I'll become a Canadian pirate.
Err... what was my point. Oh, yes, if I see something another country, culture, person (whatever the case may be) and I like it, I'll use it. I use 'Eh' when I can usually use 'Right' instead. - You going to the movies, eh? - You going to the movies, right? I use it even though the question doesn't need it. If you remove either Eh or Right then the question reminds the same. I use it to add a little charm to my post / speech. Aye, matey. Last edited by viLky; 07-05-2009 at 12:25 AM.. |
