When someone makes a joke
...and you don't get it. 
Do you:
- let it go? (no reaction)
- pretend to get the joke and laugh?
- ask questions at the risk of ruining the spontaneity that made the joke funny?
- disagree with the joke or say you don't find it funny?

My reaction is between NR or ask to clarify.
Much as I don't like to ask because it makes me look stupid for not getting the joke, some jokes are more culturally dependent (so I've got a pass for not understanding certain colloquialisms).

If I don't get it I'll ask. The way I see it, if it's not making sense to me , either the person isn't telling it right, or it wasn't that funny to begin with.
Eiither way, I'd rather ask than walk away wondering.

I used to laugh without understanding when there were other people around, since I didn't want to be the stupid one who didn't get it.
Nowadays I will either say it's not funny to cover up my ignorance or ask to clarify (depends on the situation)

I always ask if I don't understand in any situation.
When it comes to jokes it gives everyone a laugh when I don't get it and the explanation is simple.
