How important are extras in a RPG to you?
For me, I love the extras and wish companies would steal them from other games and include them into their own. Things like Battle Trophies from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, or the Item World from Disgaea. I love those extras, and sometimes I spend more time overall doing the extras rather than the actual game plot. A must is probably the battle area. Games like Star Ocean: TtEoT, Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10 had this. It was an amazing idea to stick the arena into all three games because it made the game that much more better. A terrific idea. I dream of the day where I play a solo RPG that vast more than 1,ooo hours mainly due to the extras they include. ![]() What do you think? And, what extras do you like in games that you would like to see in future games? |

Fairly.
Increasingly so as the story gets worse. |: |

If by "extras" you mean "quests that aren't part of the main quest," then The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has more of those than "main quest" "quests."
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has miscellaneous quests, faction quests and daedric quests. Miscellaneous quests can come from a non-main quest NPC. (Eg: "The Killing Fields" is given by Valus Odill) Other miscellaneous quests may be had by either interacting with the quest giver or finding the quest item. (Eg: "When the Vow Breaks.") Faction Quests are how the player moves up the faction to become "head of the guild." The Dark Brotherhood, Theives Guild, Fighter's Guild and Mage's Guild have different NPC's to assign these quests as the player progresses. Daedric Quests are given by interaction at the appropriate daedric shrine. These are available only at certain levels. Some of them require an offering to the "daedric lord," some do not. The use of additional quests in this manner adds to the gaming experience of the particular game. |

Extras can be nice sometimes, but they aren't necessary for me. Lots of times when I play an RPG I play it for the story. I don't really need things that distract me from that.
Look at Final Fantasy X-2. There are tons of extras and side quests in there and that didn't really improve it any. |

I only like extras when they have something to do with the game. I don't like playing silly racing games in the middle of FF7.

I like it when you meet new characters down the line and they have interesting stories about them. I like it that they don't become a main character but every once in a while you'll hear from them. FFX for example - I liked how O'aka turned up all over the place until later on when his brother replaced him!

I like getting extras after completing an RPG. Things that will make the next playthrough that bit more interesting

I agree, thebluesamurai. They had an optional dungeon open AFTER you beat the game in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Star Ocean: The Second Story. That made the game more interesting since you could continue doing stuff even after you beat it. ;)
I'm just wondering what the PSP Star Ocean has to offer. Any extras in that? |

Not sure about the PSP version.
I like Tales of Symphonia, coz, at the end it give you some extras to use in the next playthrough. things like, 10x money, 2x experience, keep monster list, 3x items. God I love that. Also, I like it when an RPG has a New Game+ element to it. You complete it once, then go through it again with harder monsters/bosses, and better weapons/items. |
