Noble Prize for Gaming

Researchers, tired of having incompetent computers be the sole searchers of the structures of proteins, have decided to enlist gamers in the task by developing a game that lets them have a stab at it. It's called Fold It, and it's been suggested that a particularly skilled player could end up finding a cure for HIV. Neat, huh?

Science Daily - Computer Game's High Score Could Earn The Nobel Prize In Medicine
"'We're hopefully going to change the way science is done, and who it's done by,' said Popovic, who presented the project today at the Games for Health meeting in Baltimore. 'Our ultimate goal is to have ordinary people play the game and eventually be candidates for winning the Nobel Prize.'"

If this task is so boring for scientists why do they think gamers will want to turn off GTA4 or Halo 3 and bust out some virtual test tubes?

I don't see this working very well. Maybe I just don't understand their process though but this doesn't seem like it would be a very fun "game" to play.

That game sucks, you can not pay me enough to play that crap. I know it will lead to a good cause but come on!!!! Is this suppose to entice gamers?

A free game distributed online obviously isn't supposed to compete with GTA and whatnot. Yet, people still play them, and seem to like them well enough. Heck, some people even play games in the GF arcade.

Who says it's boring for scientists? Did you read the article which explains the rational behind the game?
