Best Tennis player of all time?
Who do you guys believe is the best tennis player of all time? In my opinion it's Pete Sampras, here are some of his numbers. Career Record: 762-222 Career Titles: 64 Two Austrialian Open Wins One French Open Win Seven Wimbeldon Wins Five US Open Wins. There was a lot of great Tennis players out there, but in my opinion Pete Sampras is on top of all of them. |

Not sure if we're mixing male/females but first person to come to mind is Steffi Graf. A little check of her stats showed that:
- 22 Grand Slam singles titles, second among male and female players only to Margaret Court's 24 - ONLY female player to have won all four Grand Slam singles tournaments (Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open) at least four times each - won the Olympic gold medal in singles (1988) and all four Grand Slam singles titles that year, becoming the first player to win the "Golden Slam". - ranked by the Women's Tennis Association as World No. 1 for a record 377 total weeks – the longest of any player, male or female, since rankings began – holds the record (eight) for most years as year end World No. 1 I also have a soft spot for Agassi (especially after being linked to Graf, haha). He may not be the best male tennis player of all time but I think he would make at least the top 5. His record is impressive. He won the Golden Slam (no other player has achieved this except his wife) and all four Grand Slam singles tournaments. Even Sampras wasn't able to achieve that. Other stats:

Men's side I'll take Pete Sampras for now but I think both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be in his league when their careers are over or extremely close to that.
Why Federer? (Stats taken from wikipedia) Roger was #1 in the rankings for a record 237 consecutive weeks. Federer has won 13 Grand Slam singles titles. 3 Australian Open 5 Wimbledon 5 US Open Currently just one shy of all-time leader Pete Sampras. He has also won 4 Tennis Masters Cup titles, and 14 ATP Masters Series titles, as well as winning Olmypic Gold in doubles. He holds many records in the sport, including having appeared in 10 consecutive Grand Slam men's singles finals (2005 Wimbledon Championships through the 2007 US Open) and 19 consecutive Grand Slam singles semifinals (2004 Wimbledon–present). He also holds the open era records for most consecutive wins on both grass courts (65) and hard courts (56). He's also, what, 27 years old or something like that? He's still got some years ahead of time. |

I'm gonna say Bjorn Borg. I believe that only personal problems prevented him from being the best 'on paper'. He won 11 Grand Slam titles in 7 years, including the famous 5 wimbledons in a row, and retired at the ridiculously young age of 26.
But besides a lot of championship wins, I think Borg was the best in terms of style aswell. Sampras had a solid game, but i found him very boring to watch at times. Borg on the other hand was extremely exciting to watch, he had a fantastic playing style. Who knows what more he could have achieved if he hadn't have burnt out so young. Also, he gets bonus points for providing what will probably always be the greatest game of tennis ever against McEnroe in 1980. Second to Borg, i'd have to say Federer. Another fantastic player to watch, and he's still got a lot of time left to improve on what must be a dazzling trophy cabinet! |

I gotta agree with ysabel and say Steffi Graf. She dominated the sport for a long time. I can't call Sampras or Federer the best ever when neither has won a French Open.

I look at the career as a whole and wins are wins and the grand slams, regardless of where they happened are still remarkable. |
