Gundam and its variations

As you may guess from the topic, I'm a Gundam fan. I first got into it when I watched Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network in 2001. So far I own all the episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Wing, G Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam Seed, Gundam 0080 and Gundam 0083. I own the entire New Adventures of SD Gundam (still need to find the first half of the series) as well as the first volume of 08th MS Team.

Personally, I think Gundam is one of the best Anime series. Granted, the story line of every new series is relatively the same as the original (varying when need, of course), the development of some of the characters and the intricate plots are unique and wonderful (most of the time). The design of the different Gundams are great. Wing Zero (the series version) is my favorite with the EW version as second.

I recently picked up the entire Gundam Seed series (Anime Legends I & II). Unfortunately, 4 out of the first 25 episodes won't play in my DVD player or my pc. To make it worse, they are not on the same disc. I'm only up to episode 31 but so far I'm realy enjoying this series. Although, I really want to strangle Flay (she's quite annoying) and slap Kira on occassion.

Any other Gundam fans in here?

I guess you could say I'm a Gundam fan. I've seen, Gundam Wing, G Gundam, SD Gundam, Gundam 0080, Gundam 0083, Mobile Suit Gundam and The 08th MS Team.

My favorite would be Gundam Wing because of the Characters/Mech Designs. But I've enjoyed just about all the Gundam series I've seen except for maybe 1 or 2.

I have only seen Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny.

Both were fantastic series. And actually got me into the gundam franchise. However, I guess these Gundams were a bit different from the other series. I was reading they captured a different audience since it wasn't just about war and big mechs...

I intend to watch Gundam 00 sometime but I doubt I will watch any older Gundams.

To be completely honest, I have never seen a single episode of any Gundam series.

But after playing through the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam game on 360 I'm really interested. I wouldn't know where to start though. I did a little research and there seem to be so many variations. I'd want to start from the beginning of everything, unless some series start off as prequels. I have no idea.

Someone help me out?

Nearly all the Gundams are completely unrelated. They are in different time eras and universes pretty much.

There are a few that are sequels but on of the only ones of note is Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny.

I would check Gundam SEED out first then maybe Gundam Wing.

Sweet. I'm sure I can pick it up from someone around here.

I kind of got a grasp of some of the storylines from playing the Dynasty Warriors game. It's really linear, but so much fun.

Yeah I first got into Wing when it aired on Cartoon Network. It's a pretty decently lengthed series, not too long or short. It's got a decent storyline and plenty of action too. Endless Waltz was a great way to cap it all off.

Then when CN aired SEED, I tried watching, but it was a completely different series despite having Gundams. I kept missing episodes because it only came on once a week, so I just gave up.

I've only watched Gundam Wing but I really enjoyed it when I saw it on Cartoon Network. I really liked Duo's mech because of those awesome Laser scythes it had.
Theres one scene that made me laugh out loud though. I think it may have been in the first episode, Hiro receives an invitation to that girls party and then rips it up dramatically. Kind of tickles me the same way that the death note potato chip sequence does.

EDIT: I found the scene. It happens around 5 mins 30. Brilliant.

The Gundam series are broken up into various universes based on the calendar that is used in the show.

Original Series used the Universal Century calendar
Gundam Wing used the After Colony calendar
Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny used the Cosmic Era calendar
Mobile Fighter G Gundam used the Future Century calendar

As for where to start, Mobile Suit Gundam is where everything started. The sequels to MS Gundam ( 08th MS Team, 0080, 0083, Zeta and Double Zeta) take place in the same century so it's hard to understand those without seeing the original series first.

As for Gundam Wing, SEED and G Gundam, starting with either of those is fine since they are in completely seperate universes.

One of my favorite clips of Duo and Heero is where Duo says: "He's anti-social, thinks he's Evil Kneivel, and hardly speaks."
