RIM CEO to buy Penguins

PAUL WALDIE
Globe and Mail Update

Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive officer of Research in Motion Ltd., is expected to announce Thursday that he is buying the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League for roughly $175-million (U.S.).
Mr. Balsillie, 45, has been the front runner in the bidding for the team for the last few weeks. His name surfaced after a deal involving former Torontonian Sam Fingold fell apart this summer.
A spokesperson for Mr. Balsillie declined comment last night. However, a source said Mr. Balsillie is expected to be in Pittsburgh Thursday night for the team's opening game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
While a deal is expected to be announced shortly before the game, other sources cautioned that last minute details still needed to be worked out and that the agreement could fall apart.

A source familiar with the discussions, said Mr. Balsillie will keep the team in Pittsburgh and he has no intention of moving it to Hamilton. There had been speculation that Mr. Balsillie wanted to buy a franchise and move it to Hamilton, which is close to his home and RIM's head office in Waterloo, Ont.
Mr. Balsillie's agreement is for the team only, a source said. A deal for a new arena has yet to be worked out.
Mr. Balsillie, a billionaire, has helped build RIM into a high-tech giant through the popularity of its Blackberry device. He is also a passionate hockey fan who plays recreationally in Waterloo.

He has stated that he likes the fans in Pittsburgh, and doesn't plan to move the team, but if they cannot get that new arena, I have a feeling he'll move the team, sources say Hamilton but they would pay to much taxes to Buffalo and Toronto. So maybe Quebec (if they can get a new arena) or Winnipeg.

to be honest; do they deserve a new arena from the city? i know their current arena is old but unless its a hazzard the team has to show they are worth the investment. thats why i think they are gonna end up moving

Well most of us here are optimistic about the future, with people like Crosby and Malkin developing.. we think we can be a force in a few years. What happens this year is still unknown

I understand the future but the city has expected results from them and expects them to give results sooner than later. If it isn't looking like the city will benefit in the near future; then they won't invest in the team and let them move.

THe thing is the City does not have to put out a dime to keep them. All they have to do is approve the casino/gambling by-laws currently being reviewed and the arena will be financed independently.

Baisillie has agreed to keep the team in Pittsburgh and it is only a 30 minute flight from the Waterloo airport to PITT. If they dont get an arena the team will be moved. Hamilton is out of the question as it hits both Buffalo and TO's zones but if he can get an arena the K-W area is a possibility as it is outside both zones and the population can support a team, though Buffalo is likely to go Bankrupt

The sad part is both Pittsburg and Buffalo might be at the end of their runs because they aren't getting a lot of support from their respective cities and they aren't really putting up the numbers the roster says it should put up.
