From Black & White to Full Color HD

TV's and "cinema" in general have come a long way since the first motion pictures were made.

Where do you see the art of cinemtography in another 50 years? They are already talking about the next step past HD, which is HD4K titled for its 4,000+ lines of resolution vs HD's 1,080.

Do you think we'll live to see the day when video quality is able to match that of real life? What about a more 3d feel to the picture you watch? What if you could move your head as you watched a movie and it would appear as the image was shifting slightly as if you were seeing it through a window? Who knows.

One thing is for sure, technology will just continue to get better.

I feel like televisions will get more interactive.

Such as putting on a big headset, and you are in the show.

Eventually this would just get down to wearing sunglasses with earplugs attached.

I may have to go with simsense or simstim.

Simsense: "In the role-playing game Shadowrun, simsense is the common term for a device that uses ASIST technology (developed in the mid-2020's by Echo Mirage) and direct neural interface devices like the datajack to transmit a sensory experience to the user, usually recorded on an optical chip. For the plebians (read- NPCs), simsense is mostly a form of recreation and/or way to escape the troubles of life; for shadowrunners and more professional computer-using types, it's the gateway to decking.

There are a number of varying levels of sensory stimulus. Baseline is the cheapest because it only replays the physical stimuli- someone going down on you, the impact of the concrete as you leap from a moving car, and the like. Full-X is the next level, as it is capable of replaying emotional parts- the casual disattachment of casual sex, the fear of knowing that the cabbie you had hitched with was out to kill you. The extra processing is more costly, but is also generally more provocative an experience.

The more powerful chips produce effects so powerful, they are as or more addictive than the street drugs of the late 20th century. BTL, an abbrieviation for Better Than Life (pronounced "beetle"), usually uses a high-volume ASIST output while directly stimulating the limbic centers of the brain. There are few limits to what kind of sensory experiences BTL chips provide, and they are almost always addictive to the point where the user will simply play back the experience time after time, ignoring the demands of food and water from his body. Most deckers run their ASIST systems at levels that are just below BTL ranges, which would explain the immediate and fatal nature of black IC. There are chips more powerful than BTL called 2XS, which usually only have to run once or twice before they kill the user outright.

Concepts similar to simsense are simex of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell and simstim of William Gibson's Neuromancer."

Simstim: "A portmanteau of simulated stimuli, simstim is a technology whereby a person's brain and nervous system is stimulated to simulate the full sensory experience of another person. Simstim is usually used as a form of entertainment, whereby recordings of simstim stars in soap operas are transmitted in effect replacing television. However, simstim also has other uses; Case is connected to Molly via simstim during the Panther Modern's attack on Sense/Net. In this way, simstim was used as a sophisticated method of communication although the signal was one-way."

Of course, I doubt they'd be able to get the emotions of Full-X simsense chips, but the baseline could be possible.

I think that we'll live to see the day when holograms are used for movies, i have no clue how they could film that but, obviously, that would be even better than the image shifting just a bit if you moved your head. It sounds a bit far off but I think it will happen.

We'll definitely live to see real life quality in movies, 50 years ago nobody would have dreamed that we would have anything close to what we do have.

I'm also looking forward to see what is done with surround sound and wireless power and how all of that will tie into the ultimate cinema experience.

You'd be surprised. 50 years ago, people thought we would be exploring space. As in, being able to live in space, on other planets.

I think the next big step will not so much be with the TV sets but the broadcasters. The internet will play a roll and it will basically be interactive TV. Stop, start, forward and the basics will be common place but also will come options where you can select infobites, camera angles or statistics. Possibly even plot direction.

I think the next steps wont be so much about cinematography but accessability and convenience. TV will get thinner and thiner and placed on more versatile and light weight materials(and importantly in todays age-less power consumption). TV Paper or even TV air where a column of light is used as the source will start appearing. Anything that makes it more convenient for the consumer.

I also think with the rise of smart phones TV will be in your pocket, this in turn should fuel the "interactive" TV I talked about. TV will basically become an application.

It is already being done. LG have a 3DTV, they are being trailled in Asia at the moment. Im not sure if they will improve home cinema but I do think they will revolutionise advertising in places liek shop fronts and airports etc... places where you will be physically walking past to fully apppreciate the 3rd dimension.
