Question Musicians who don't write their own songs

Does it bug you when you hear about musicians who don't write their own songs? It's surprising to see how many artists nowadays are not writing their own songs.

It bugs me slightly but not enough to stop listening to the stuff. I mean, if I like the song then I like the song. That's how I see it.

It's more impressive if they write their own stuff but even if they don't it's not the end of the world for me.

Not at all. They perform it, and usually write the music around the words.

It's definitely weird hearing a musician that never writes his/her own stuff playing a song that he wrote.

It almost doesn't sound like the musician.

It bugs me when they get lots of credit for the song, yes. Most of the bands I listen to write their own music and that's one of the reasons I love them so much. It's about real experiences and I love hearing people sing with passion.

I don't have that problem listening to rap/hip-hop music. The majority of them write their own lyrics, with the exception of Diddy and Dr. Dre, to name a few of the bigger names that don't.

When it comes to the other types of music I listen to, t doesn't turn me off but it also doeswn't help anything.

Alice in Chains is the ultimate case. People think they're grunge, but if grunge is about personal emotion, why did they not write their own songs like Nirvana?

When you say write songs you referring to writing music and lyrics or at least one of them?
I personally enjoy songs that are sung because of the lyrics and the voice that accompanies it.
It doesn't matter to me who is behind the creation of the song.

I appreciate musicans more when they write their own songs. It gives an insight to their lives; emotions, opinions, thoughts.

No, it doesn't bother me.

Singers for me are primarily performers. They can even transform someone's nonsense lyrics into something that actually touch people. One doesn't need writing talent to be a good performer on stage or recording.

I do admire those who both write and perform their music. I just don't think less of those who simply can do the latter.

It doesn't bother me, but it does maybe make wonder a bit. I appreciate the song more if I know that the artist wrote it because it's coming from their heart and their mind, but usually I don't care enough to notice or find out. Like you, if I like the song, I like the song.

I'm generally not a fan of covers, unless the artist really makes the song his/her own. On quite a few occasions though I've been asked by friends whether I like a song or not and I'll say I prefer the original, and they didn't even know there was an original, so yeah I don't like it when newer bands somehow take credit for art they didn't even write and then butcher the song.

It doesn't really bother me though, I just find I appreciate songs more when I know it's coming from the person singing it because it just adds to the talent. But that's not to say there aren't some fantastic covers out there, or musicians who don't write their own material.
