Waves vs. Paper

So there are lots of mucicians who cant read music at all. They are called ear players. They have a knack for pitch, or just flat out perfect pitch

Some musicians who can read music really disrespect ear players because they didnt need to work as hard to achieve their level of skill

Some musicians who can read really respect ear players for their (usually) amazing pitch and astounding style.

I, personally, dont care at all. I say if you can play, play away. Reading music wasnt around when music was created.

Opinion.

Discuss.

Throw it down.

There was a quote here, but the the person who SAID the quote and pretty much ASKED for it to be placed in my sig asked for it to be removed.

Interesting. I generally have played by ear but I also read notes. Let me get started again and soon I'll have to make another post with whether or not I still have it.

I can read music and after I've played something I can hear if it's wrong, but I can't play something just from listening at all and am quite jealous of those that can. While I would never want to lose my music reading abilities, I would sure like to have both. But then I'm also completely tone deaf and can't sing AT ALL.

Michel Brecker!

He had perfect pitch and a "photographic memory"

He could do whatever the **** he wanted when it came to music. And he did.

My orchestra teacher has perfect pitch. I guess it comes in handy for a job like that.

I don't have perfect pitch, but I have a pretty good ear. I'm pretty sensitive to notes that are in tune and barely out of tune. Since I can't really see the notes, I memorize every song that I play. I can usually get the notes down after several run-throughs as long as it's not too incredibly tough.

Did you always have a sensitivity to pitch, or did you develop it out of necessity?

I'm not sure, but I think I developed it. But over the past...I would say, 8-9 years, I've had good ears.

Uh, I can't really read music. But while I was practicing Kumbaya, I didn't have to look at the music. I could hear the changes in the song by just listening to it. Instead of using the book, I used the disk it came with and tried playing along with it until I had the song memorized. :3 I don't think I have the perfect pitch or ear, though. I just know what those three notes sound like.

I try to mix them both and do it horribly. I can't associate note names with the sounds I'm hearing and it throws me off.

I don't have perfect pitch, but I do have a good sense of tune. I can tell if something is out of tune or not. I've been getting better pitch perception from tuning my guitar by ear instead of cheating by using a tuner. I have great respect for people who have perfect pitch. I wish I had perfect pitch because then I could transcribe all the melodies in my head onto paper and create wonderful music. I can however read sheet music. Bass and treble clef. Nothing to it really. Just remember the acronyms, and you're all set to go.

amirite, or amirite?
