Going back and playing GoldenEye & Perfect Dark
Honestly I doubt I'll ever play much of them again. I love the FPS controls used in newer games and the N64 shooter controls just don't work for me anymore. I can't get used to them after playing new shooters on newer consoles and being a PC gamer with the keyboard mouse combo for so long. It's just unfortunate that out of all the control options they give you, none of them are really very good for today's standards. ![]() So who else used to like these games? Have you tried going back and playing them again? Did the controls throw you off? |

I think I tried playing PD or GE a few years ago and I just couldn't get used to the controls. I used to love them, but after playing so many shooters with two analog sticks it's impossible to go back to just one, except in Metroid Prime since you can still move and aim at the same time.

There was a Rainbow Six game for the n64 that used the C pad as the second analog stick basically. I really wish there was a control scheme like that for GoldenEye. It feels really similar to new games like Halo.

I think Turok had a control option like that. The problem is that the C-pad is on the right side and is used for moving while the stick is aiming. It's impossible to move with the right and aim with the left after playing the newer shooters where the moving is on the left stick and aiming on the right stick.

Exactly. In the end I'm glad the switch occurred though. I like the newer controls in newer games a lot better.
I used to think the N64 controller was amazing but honestly I think the XBOX and Xbox 360 have the best controllers ever. It melts into your hands compared to the n64 controller which had an entire extra part that was only used for some games. Looking back the n64 controller could have been a ton better. |

Well for a one-stick controller I think the N64 controller was amazing. Yeah, the stick was cheaply made and wasn't precise or durable, but the controller was comfortable, innovative (Z-trigger), and all of the buttons were within easy reach. We're kind of going off-topic though.

Yeah I can go back and play them still, I just use the C buttons in Perfect Dark to fix that little annoying problem, it's basically the same thing with buttons, so I have no problem with it.
I think I still like the controls of the older games because I like to play games that use WASD which is very similar, I use the c buttons to walk from side to side and the control stick to go forward, backwards, and turn, it's really not all that different for me at least. I can see why someone would be annoyed by that though, maybe they should re-release both of those games with new controls just to accommodate people, they'd be huge hits. (even if they're old) |

I'm fine with the PD and GE controls. It's a control scheme that I've grown very used to after all those hours of playing back in the day. I think it's the same as getting used to any control scheme in any old game again.
As for this controller side-topic that popped up, I think we'll all agree that the 360 controller is the best. The N64 controller was good for its time but it was also a hefty, bizarre thing that sometimes just didn't work very well (Duke Nukem 64 controls come to mind). FPS controls are unrivaled on the Wii though, (keyboard and mouse aside). |

I made a new thread about controllers RossDude. It's in the main General Gaming forum here.
As for jumping back into GE and PD, do you play other shooters much? For me the dual joysticks on XBOX and PS just became second nature. It would be like reversing the direction that steering wheels cause a car to go (for me). That's how big of a change I think it is. I simply can't go back, and don't really want to due to the fact that it makes me worse at newer shooters. It's not just a different control scheme, it's a handicap. Try switching to a different keyboard layout. That's how I feel when going back and playing GoldenEye.

I never played Perfect Dark, so if I did go back and play it it'd be for the first time. I have put Goldeneye in and played for a little bit. Mostly just the Multiplayer with my brother.
I attempted to play the single player a little earlier this last weekend but just kept getting side tracked talking to people on my laptop ![]() Dropping down in picture quality doesnt bug me. I actually bought Zelda OoT on Ebay and plan on playing that for the first time when it comes in. I also snagged up Mario Tennis, loved that game but I think we only rented it at the time. I love how I can go back and buy these games on ebay for so much cheaper than what they were then! Oh man and a fraction of what a PS3 games costs! |
