I think the show needs to do one of the following options:
1. Be done after this season.
2. be done with Michael Scott (let's face it. no smart company ceo would ever allow that guy back after all that he has done AND the fact that he quit and started a competing company)
3. Have the new boss hire a new regional manager and continue the show with some new chemistry.
Unfortunately, they will most likely take option 4:
4. Leave Michael Scott in the show and let him become regional manager again somehow.
This option COULD work but I have to say I am getting very sick of these big plot twist bluffs. Either do it or don't do it. Dwight getting fired. Toby quitting. Ryan being promoted, then fired, then rehired. I mean when does it end.
It's absurd and no intelligent viewer should be expected to sit through this and take it as if it's funny when the writers keep pulling these drastic switcharoos on them. It just gets extremely old. Either write the show in the context that audiences have grown to love or end it. Major plot change bluffs just make people annoyed if you ask me.
I think it's BS when shows do major plot twists and major cast changes. I find it annoying to have the rug pulled out from under me like that as a viewer. It's supposed to be a comedy. Lately it's starting to feel a little too much like E.R. at an office instead of a hospital.
