Question Rodents as Pets?

So do you think rodents make good pets?

I've had several pet rodents including:

Mice
Gerbils
Hamsters
Guinea Pigs

Never had a rat or a ferret but I don't see any reason not to have either.

I mainly had mice, gerbils and hamsters though. In fact I got them to all live with each other without fighting too. Beats having three cages.

I think rodents make really good pets, especially if you build an elaborate environment for them to live in. I pretty much had a zoo display set up when I had pet rodents. I'd put plants, rocks, branches etc into a large aquarium with a ton of dirt/bedding material. They would dig tunnels that would actually hold up, and you could see some of the tunnels from the side of the aquarium.

The only problem with rodents is that they multiply, well, like rodents.

I had to keep giving/selling the babies to pet stores because if I didn't I'd easily have 30-40 of the buggers in no time.

It's a pain to keep the cage/aquarium (whatever you use) clean though. You have to clean it out about once a week or things will start to stink. It's worth it though. They are pretty entertaining to watch.

I know I have some pictures but I can't find them right now. If I come across them I'll post them in here.

I may end up weighing 500lbs but I'll still find a way to pull it off sexily at the nudist colony. ~ysabel

One of my friends had a chinchilla which was awesome. I think that's the only rodent I would want for a pet.

I had a rat. she was really cool.

I'd love to have a guinea pig, but I already have 4 varmints (5 if you count Delaney), and that would be a lot of work.

I dream of a world in which chickens can cross the road and no one questions their motives.

This is why I don't have them. I got a dwarf hamster right after we got marries, she was about the size of a mouse and she managed to get out while we were gone one weekend. For about a week after I kept thinking I saw her and in the middle of the night once I was bit on my toe. Knyte thought I was crazy when I told him I thought it was the hamster as he assumed she was long since dead but then I found her and was able to catch her a couple days later and she lived a couple more years. She never managed to escape again though.

Kiwi if you think one escaped rodent is bad try about 10-15 LOL!

Once some people were staying at our house and one of their little kids decided to go play with the gerbils. Well she basically let all of them escape because she left the lid off of TWO cages.

I was probably around 13 or so when this happened. We were told if we didn't catch them that my parents would put mouse traps out. Luckily that didn't happen.

Luckily we were able to find all but one. They were pretty tame and they would come into the middle of the room to eat some food we put out. They didn't try to run when we picked them up so it was pretty easy getting them back.

We found the last one sitting on top of the cage the next day. I guess it got bored of being free.

I raised mice for a while. They like to eat each other and they squeak all night long.

I like hamsters and other rodents like that to keep as pets, they're not very high maintenance and fun to let run around in a plastic ball. The worst part is when you lose one, though, because those little buggers are hard to catch.

I hear good things about Guinea pigs. My girlfriend used to have one and she loved him a lot.

Yes. I had several hamsters throughout my childhood and a few guinea pigs.

The only complain I have is they don't live long enough.
