My oldest son would like to have a few spiders but I keep on telling him that he isn't ready for a high maintenance pet. He is still at goldfish level and not doing to good of a job at that.

Actually, most species of Theraphosidae are actually extremely low maintenance as well as species of scolopendramorpha. For my adult Grammastola rosea, I simply feed it two large crickets and fill the water bowl. That's it. Its enclosure is a simple rubber maid container with a hiding spot and some substrate.
