Expected Value

Please tell us how knowing about EV has benefitted your game and how practical it is at the table itself, or if it is a theory/practice tool used away from the table. Thanks, and may all your hands be winners!

Re: Expected Value

EV is sooo important at the table when deciding when to call or not. For example I have 9 10 and the flop is 783 someone bets 10 dollars into a pot of 12. If it is just me and that guy i fold, because odds are he will not call if your str8 comes. However if it is me, the man who makes the bet, and a caller or 2 then i call instantly, because the odds are that at least one of them will think that their hand is good and pay you off.EV is measured byhow much you expect to win in the end vs. how much of a bet you are calling.

Re: Expected Value

I understand what EV is, and if you sit down you can calculate an approximate monetary value to a decision - then decide which decision may be more profitable in the end.

However, isn't pot vs card odds more practical at the table? I understand that if the pot odds and implied odds are favorable versus your odds of making a winning hand and being paid off then you are making a good bet. I understand also understand that this will, in the end create a certain EV.

However - correct me if I am mistaken - Is it true to say that EV is typically NOT calculated at the table and is more of a theoretical tool whereas pot odds vs card odds calculations are more practical?

EV and Pot odds are intertwined, but I am speaking in a strict sense of the definition of EV and its practical use at the table. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: Expected Value

No you are right it is a theory, and pot odds is the most practical way to make money. If you were to play just the odds you would make money in the long run without a doubt. I play pot odds and have been making constant money online and live. I used to play an aggressive style and when i changed to my TAG (tight aggressive style) I have made so much more money. To be aggressive is to break even over the long run to play odds is to make small amounts of money at a time. Odds of you winning say the Sunday million playing by the book is low. However if you are aggressive and get lucky you would have a better chance.
