McCain chooses Palin

Quote:
DENVER - John McCain tapped Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a conservative who shares his maverick streak, to be the Republican vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

In an announcement, McCain's campaign said that Palin, who has been governor less than two years, "has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of.

"Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today," the announcement said.
McCain and Palin were appearing together in swing-state Ohio later in the day.

Palin has a strong anti-abortion record, and her selection was praised warmly by social conservatives whose support Mccain needs to prevail in the campaign for the White House.

"It's an absolutely brilliant choice," said Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University school of Law. "This will absolutely energize Mccain's campaign and energize conservatives," he predicted.

With his pick, McCain passed over more prominent contenders like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, as well as others such for former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, whose support for abortion rights might have sparked unrest at the convention that opens Monday in St. Paul, Minn.
The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama derives from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger than two of McCain's seven children. She also is considerably younger than Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well — and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In its formal announcement, the campaign pointed to her powers as head of the Alaska National Guard and the mother of a soldier herself as evidence that she "understands what it takes to lead our nation..."

I was hoping to see Romney in there, but to be 100% honest I think this is a Screwball that could make a difference here.

Well it would seem that even with her record she's still a she. With HIlary dropping out I thought there wouldn't be a woman in the white house. Now there's still a chance. I lol'd.

But I really think this could change the tide a bit. Nothing like a cinderblock in a lake type ripple effect.

Thats kinda what I was thinking. In a sense now McCain has that ace in the hole to play. Either we'll have our First Female VP or our First non-White President.

Also I loved the timing. This pick pretty much trumped whatever it was that Obama said last night that everyone had been anticipating before. All yesterday all I saw in the news was in anticipation of Obama's big speech. Now today I havent heard how it went... instead the news is buzzing over McCains VP choice.

Whoever McCains campaign advisor is... I think he's earning his cut so far.

Very clever.

Obama picked Biden to make up for what were his perceived weaknesses - lack of experience, and poor foreign policy. However, people can attack him, saying he basically admits that those are his weaknesses, and because Biden publicly criticized Obama's foreign policy before, it seems like Obama may be starting to flip-flop like Kerry did.

McCain is doing much the same thing. He's picking someone who makes up for some of his perceived weaknesses. However, McCain can cite Palin's experience with the military as a reason that he can have her as VP, yet not be hypocritical for his attacks on Obama (plus the fact that an inexperienced VP is not as much of a problem as an inexperienced president). Additionally, he'll probably gain some of the votes that Hillary had just because she's a woman.

I am probably more familiar with Palin than anyone else here. Here are some quick points:
-Her first act as gov was to sell the Governor's jet on ebay and vow to fly commercial.
-She has 5 children. Her last child was born this year and has downs.
-Very much pro-life.
-Captain of State basketball team.
-Very pro ANWR.
-She fought and passed legislation to give every man, woman and child $1200 energy rebate from the state surplus. This is on top of the $2000 we will receive for the permanent fund.
-She is involved in a dispute with the State Troopers over the firing of her ex-brother in law.
-Her husband runs the Iron Dog which is the Ididarod on snow machines.
-She's a surprisingly good debater. Very quick wit.

I have never seen a campaign run so well. I would have bet money this would be a 10 point Obama lead by this point.

Nice. For the most part, I'm glad to hear it. To me, pro-life is the most important thing.

Her being the type of person who would sell the jet and fly commercial sounds good. I'm unsure about what I think about ANWR. The dispute with the State Troopers sounds a bit bad, but I looked it up, and her side of the story sounds reasonable.

After the news last night that Huckabee told supporters he wasn't the guy I was also hoping to see Romney. Then after the news today I was surprised at first but I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. If McCain had chosen Romney the news would have simply said "Well McCain chose Romney". Instead, now the news will be covering Sarah Palin for some time now.

Talk about snubbing the DNC media coverage too. Perfect timing for the McCain campaign and so far from what I've seen and heard Palin should give Biden a run for his money in the upcoming VP debates.

This is a knock out punch.

"She's inexperieced."
So is Obama and he is running for the President.

Conservatives are going to love Palin. Particularly the religious Conservatives. The women that were supporting Hillary b/c she's a woman will love her.

From a stategy perspective this is brillant. I am amazed JohnyMac did it.

..wasn't she the one who presided over some sort of incredibly gay victory in Alaska for same- sex couples with children, or something? I heard some talk about "horrible precedent", so I assume it was extremely principled and consistent as well as logical under the law. Involving ideas like "people have rights, and do not have to be upgraded to humans by legislature in case they happen to be: women, gay, stupid, red, blue, yellow, don't own a store, etc.

Anyway - wow. A woman. Who doesn't seem to be brainwashed, and at least has some sort of grasp of constitutional law and federal issues. And so probably won't accept the idea that some things should be done, just because the president suggests it in a speech. I wonder if they can live with that..

..I know - it's a way to make the sexually confused conservatives channel all their Coulter worship over to an actual woman. So no matter what she says, they'll just embrace her anyway. Got to be it. God knows (he really does, you know) selecting a woman for high office is not going to fly well with the base otherwise. Because you know - it's not right, even if it's the way the times are. "So is this the progress the republican party is entertaining? Grand Old Party? It's going to be just for /show/... /now/.. ".

No, I don't know what the campaign is thinking this time. But wow. A woman. Like Hitlery Clinton. One of those... "women".

Just wait for it people - the noise about utterly and completely unrelated issues are going to be industrious. Then, when chips are down, the woman(Palin) is going to be treated like dog- crap on an expensive carpet. *shakes head*
