Time Warner Wants to Dump AOL

Report: Time Warner in talks with Yahoo, Microsoft for AOL deal

Microsoft buying AOL is even dumber than Microsoft buying Yahoo.

Report: Time Warner in talks with Yahoo, Microsoft for AOL deal
A merger or sale of AOL may be in the works, according to Reuters
By Linda Rosencrance

July 16, 2008 (Computerworld) Time Warner Inc. is in separate talks with Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. to sell its AOL LLC Internet division before Yahoo holds its annual shareholders meeting on Aug. 1, according to a Reuters report.
The structure of the deal is unclear, according to Reuters Group Ltd. Unidentified sources had previously said that any deal with Time Warner would probably involve an AOL merger with Yahoo, with Time Warner taking a minority stake in the combined company, according to Reuters. However, the sources told Reuters that any deal with Microsoft would involve the sale of AOL to the software maker.
Time Warner is apparently interesting in selling AOL as it centers its business around content, not distribution, according to Reuters.
Either of these deals would help position Yahoo or Microsoft to better compete with Google Inc.
Microsoft declined to comment on the report. Neither Yahoo nor Time Warner could be reached for comment.
A Microsoft deal with AOL makes sense if Microsoft's goal is to increase traffic, said Allan Krans, an analyst at Technology Business Research Inc. in Hampton, N.H.

I thought Time Warner already did drop AOL. I guess they just took it out of their name "AOL Time Warner".

I don't know why AOL is still in business honestly. They stay in business because people who don't know any better don't want to lose their @aol.com email addresses that they've had since the 56k days. That's literally the only thing AOL has going for them.

As someone who was a BETA TESTER for AOL many moons ago (oh, if only a beta SHAREHOLDER - I learned again this week that, as much as people always have and always will dump on them, they still get a LOT of folks online.
They picked up our station's story about the Redmond woman with 140-pound tumor, and gave us the biggest two-day spike in our history - on one day, nearly HALF our page views, about 42K, came from AOL. (We also got picked up by MSNBC and CNN
People, especially techies, always have and always will dump on AOL - remember the many "free hour" CD coasters? - but it does still have a brand with value, despite all the bad moves, etc. I also remember when I used to have to pay $5 or more an HOUR to go online! The bad old days, indeed

Yeah, count me and my wife in that crew. Even though we use Verizon DSL for Internet access (the missus works for Verizon so we get a substantial discount) we both still have AOL email accounts as our primary email account. And just for the reason you cite. We've had those email accounts for about 10 years and we're just too lazy to switch.
