When a card like Coal Stoker (Which adds 3 red mana to your pool) is played, you must use that mana before the next phase or it burns away. Mana burn prevents the stockpiling of mana through cards like Gemhide Sliver.

Does anyone know if a card (i.e. gemhide sliver, coal stoaker) adds mana to your pool, does it stay there forever, or just temporarily?

It depends on the rules you are playing with.
Some rules refer to mana burn
IE: You tap a Birds of Paradise and add a forest to yur mana pool, you don't use that mana so you suffere from mana burn and lose one hp per unused (summoned) mana in your mana pool. (this rule doesn't take affect for basic land)
This was to prevent (largely red) decks from abusing the mana. For instance one of my decks:
I had a red/blue counter/dd deck. I'd get Urza's Tower, Power Plant and Mine together and just sit there and add and add and add mana to my mana pool. Get a fireball and o like 329482379 damage with all the added up mana.
Thats why I play with the mana burn rule.
I used to play, sometimes wish I could get back into it. My friend and I would tear through the tournaments here. I had my red/blue dd/counter and he had black/blue burn/counter. We both had some aweswome artifact cards but I remember he used Day of the Dragon (or whatever) no me all the time I hated it. All the sudden all these 0/1 creature tokens (created from some artifact) become 5/5 flying dragons. It's like wtf? Haha

So as long as the mana gets used that turn, it stays?

Lands you play from your hand never burn away, unless you tap them, don't use the mana, and then go to another phase (not turn).
Cards like Gemhide Sliver only add mana to the pool for one phase, after that it burns away and you take damage.
The mana does not stay however. If you tap a land, does the tapped mana remain in play? Not once you've used it. You must tap that land again next turn to get that mana back in the pool. Gemhide Sliver must be tapped each turn to get that 1 colorless mana. If that mana isn't used, it burns away and you suffer. If it's used, then the mana is gone.

Yeah totally.
I'm a level three mage ork hunter. I use my mana to hunt wild bore orcs, and feed my family of higher elves.

Re: Magic: The Gathering
I used to play years ago, but I haven't had anyone to play with in a long time. My old decks probably don't fit whatever rules exist now.

I played with a buddy in high school, back in 1998-2000 or so...I loved the game, the art, etc.
Now, I pretty much totally forget how to play, and all of my cards are about 10 years old!
Are there ways to play online now, instead of actually getting the cards? Is it a hard game to "re-learn?"
