I know there are a lot of fantastic RPGs out there, and most of them seem to take the Middle Earth route. I don't know why considering you have space, future, modern, ice age, cave man-ish-thing and other themes to look at. Does a great RPG have to be medieval? Is this why the majority of RPGs are taken place in those times?
The one RPG that is space/Middle Earth theme is Star Ocean. They go the future route, but also take you to the medieval route, too. You basically start off future, go medieval, back to future for a short time, medieval and eventually back to future when the game is nearing the end. I find that Star Ocean: TtEoT (Till the End of Time) is perhaps one of the best RPGs out there. Though, it does take a medieval theme and not strictly futuristic.
Now, what's the deal with the majority of RPGs being medieval. Do designers feel that is the best approach? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Middle Earth theme. I'm just curious why most of the RPGs follow this instead of other settings.

Personally I only like the medieval ones. The others might be fun but I just can't really get into it unless there are knights, wizards, swords, etc. I'm used to the types of characters and weapons in medieval RPG's and as cool as pulling out Tommy Gun with -250 damage I'd just rather use my Excalibur or Green Destiny thank you very much.

Fallout 1 & 2, Mass Effect, Okami, Final Fantasy 5 & 6, Parasite Eve II, System Shock 1 & 2, etc.

D&D was the first tabletop RPG, and is still the most popular. Since it has a medieval fantasy theme, people who like that kinda thing are more drawn to it, and thus more likely to get introduced to RPGs. It was tabletop gamers who made the first CRPGs, and they mostly aimed at trying to duplicate D&D to a degree, and later CRPG designers just duplicated them to a degree. So, basically, most CRPGs have a medieval fantasy setting because most CRPGs have a medieval fantasy setting. If someone hates medieval fantasy, they're probably not going to play a lot of the best CRPGs and fall in love with that kinda game.

Although, if you want to get anal about it, CRPGs aren't true, pure RPGs, due to the (usual) focus on equipment and stats and (usual) lack of infinate choice.
Hold up, I'll make a topic about that.

I couldn't get into Final Fantasy VII or VIII, but absolutely LOVED IX. It was the villages type setting that I loved. That's why I liked Kingdom Hearts, and why I'm now addicted to Fable II.
